Pumpkins!

I planted pumpkins this year,a repeat from a couple years ago when I failed miserably. This year Megan really wanted to make pumpkin pie and so I thought that a good way to do that was by raising our own pumpkins. Little did I know what that would entail.

We planted tiny little seedlings, looking much like our cucumbers and the vines took over, much like our cucumbers do every year. They grew out of the raised bed and under the fence and into the front yard. With the feet and feet of vine that was produced,we only got 3 pumpkins. 1 deflated after the bugs got to it,one is hanging in a place where it’s hard to get pictures of it and one is sitting and growing in the front yard. It started out as a tiny thing about the size of a marble and then the growth exploded.

In exactly 1 month the pumpkins went from this (about the size of a kiwi)…

to this (roughly 9″x9″without the stem)…
Now…does anybody know if I can pull it off the vine and let it finish getting ripe on the front porch or does it need to stay there? I’d really really like to mow under this thing…:)

As far as I know, yes, you can take it off the vine now. I would leave the stem attached,so cut above it on the main vine and leave the stem both as a handle as because I think it helps it cure. I think your biggest problem now is that it might rot out before Halloween. Keep it from freezing,at least, and probably not direct sun, either.
